Garment Launderer

Responsible for the careful cleaning, drying, pressing and preparation of personal garments.

Primary responsibilities

  • Sort garments according to fabric, color and care requirements
  • Review garment care labels before washing
  • Check pockets
  • Inspect garments for stains
  • Treat stains appropriately
  • Select appropriate washing method
  • Use appropriate water temperature
  • Use environmentally responsible laundry products
  • Hand wash delicate garments when appropriate
  • Air dry garments whenever possible
  • Use dryers only when appropriate
  • Steam or press garments
  • Fold or hang garments correctly
  • Return garments to the wardrobe
  • Report stains, damage or unusual garment conditions
  • Maintain laundry equipment
  • Keep the laundry area clean and organized

Professional standards

  • The care label is read before every single wash — no exceptions.
  • Only approved organic and natural laundry products are used.
  • Water is kept as cool as the soil allows; heat is the most common cause of damage.
  • Delicates are washed in mesh bags, never crowded, and never wrung.
  • Garments are air dried whenever the weather and fabric allow.
  • Anything unexpected — a new stain, a loose seam, a missing button — is reported the same day.
  • The laundry area is left clean, dry and tidy at the end of every session.

When in doubt, do not wash.

If a garment is expensive, vintage, designer, heavily embellished, made from an unusual fabric, marked dry clean only, or structurally delicate, consult the Wardrobe Manager before proceeding.
